In Jessie Jones’ broadside “In Motion Keeps,” the narrator calms herself through surgery by “numbering the many failed / sailings of the Northwest.” Strange palliatives, these shipwrecks allow her to see her situation from a safe distance and to reach a tentative acceptance of mortality.
