In Jessie Jones’ broadside “In Motion Keeps,” the narrator calms herself through surgery by “numbering the many failed / sailings of the Northwest.” Strange palliatives, these shipwrecks allow her to see her situation from a safe distance and to reach a tentative acceptance of mortality. This poem displays Jessie Jones’ unique ability to combine emotional narrative, historical curiosity, and intellectual engagement. Jessie’s first chapbook is forthcoming from Desert Pets Press in Spring 2017.
